Incrementalrotary encoder

Functionality, working principle and versatile application possibilities

An incremental encoder, often simply referred to as an incremental encoder, is an indispensable electromechanical instrument in modern industrial technology. But what makes this device so special and how exactly does it work? In this article, we delve deep into the heart of this marvel of measurement technology and explore its diverse applications.

The incremental encoder converts mechanical movements - especially rotary movements - into electronic signals. At the core of this process is a coded disk that is attached to the rotary shaft of the encoder. This disc is provided with a series of regularly alternating transparent and opaque sections.

As the shaft rotates, the coded disc passes through a beam of light emitted by an optoelectronic sensor. Every time an opaque section blocks the light beam or a transparent section allows the light to pass through, the sensor generates a signal. These signals – or pulses – are then counted by the machine control or another electronic system.

A key advantage of incremental encoders is their ability to detect direction. This is achieved by two signal outputs that are out of phase. By comparing these two signals, the system can determine not only the speed of rotation, but also the direction of rotation.

Thanks to their precision and reliability, incremental encoders have found a wide range of applications in industry:

  • Engine control: They enable precise speed and position control for electric motors in applications such as conveyor systems or CNC machines.
  • Elevator and crane control: Here they ensure accurate positioning and safe operation by monitoring the speed and position of the elevator car or crane arm.
  • Industrial automation: In automated production lines, they monitor the position and speed of machine components, ensuring seamless and efficient production.
  • Robotics: They play a crucial role in the precise positioning and movement of robot arms and hands.

The above applications are only a small excerpt of what is possible with incremental encoders. Their flexibility and accuracy make them an essential tool in almost any sector where precision movements and measurements are required.

Incremental encoders are more than just sensors. They are the heart of many modern machines and systems that shape today's industrial landscape. Their ability to translate the finest movements into precise electronic signals makes them indispensable for many technical applications. Regardless of whether in robotics, mechanical engineering or transport technology - the reliable and precise operation of incremental encoders contributes significantly to the efficiency and safety of systems.
