Absolute encoder
Multi-turn

The master of precise position detection over multiple revolutions

Multiturn encoders are the measure of all things when it comes to precisely recording positions over several revolutions. These specialized devices are essential in industrial applications where detailed motion profiles and multiple repetitions are required. But how do multiturn encoders work? And in which applications do they show their true strength?

In contrast to single-turn encoders, which measure positions within a single 360° rotation, multi-turn encoders can record the number of full revolutions as well as the position within the current revolution. This allows for accurate positioning over a much larger rotation range.

The heart of a multiturn encoder is a complex system of coded disks and counters. While one disk measures the current position within the revolution, another mechanism tracks the number of full revolutions. This is often accomplished using special gearing that causes a fraction of a revolution on a secondary pulley for each complete revolution of the main shaft.

Together, these systems enable the encoder to provide accurate position information over thousands or even millions of revolutions.

Thanks to their advanced positioning capabilities, multiturn encoders are essential in a variety of industries and applications:

  • Industrial drive systems: In applications such as spindle drives and linear drives, they enable precise positioning over long ranges of motion.
  • Cranes and hoists: Multiturn encoders can track the position and height of loads over long distances, ensuring safety and precision.
  • Solar tracking systems: In solar power plants, they track the position of the solar panels throughout the day in order to achieve maximum energy yield.
  • Wind Turbines: By monitoring the blade position and rotation, they ensure optimal energy generation and protection against strong winds.

Multiturn encoders are the backbone of many industrial systems that require precise movements over long distances. Their ability to sense both precise position and number of revolutions means they offer unparalleled precision in applications far beyond what is possible with traditional single-turn encoders. In a world constantly striving for greater accuracy and efficiency, multiturn encoders are essential tools that point the way to the future.
